EUROPE! VOICES OF WOMEN IN FILM BACK ↩

Since the 2017 Sydney Film Festival, the status of women in the industry has been thrust into the spotlight in a significant way. The essential campaign against sexual harassment has brought attention not only to the treatment of women, but to their vast underrepresentation on-and-off-screen, including as filmmakers.

Still, just 11% of the year’s 250 top-grossing movies were helmed by female directors. That’s an increase from 7% in 2016- and includes one of 2017’s 10 biggest box office earners, Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman – but it’s only the beginning of the journey towards inclusivity and parity.

Around the globe, women are fighting for change by crafting fantastic features, 10 of which comprise this showcase. Proudly presented by European Film Promotion and Sydney Film Festival, with media partner Screen International, for the second consecutive year, it highlights the work of European talents leading by example. From Germany to Finland and Kosovo to Georgia, they represent the future of the industry.
